1 Mapping National Park Service Lands

The United States has 63 national parks, which are congressionally designated protected areas operated by the National Park Service (NPS), an agency of the Department of the Interior. The NPS provides accurate and up-to-date geospatial data for my analysis of US national parks. In this section, I delve into national park visitation data to have an overview of my research subject.

1.1 Data Wrangling

After exploring the NPS datasets, I wrangled the boundaries, centroids, and recreation visitors of national parks.

Visitation by state and by park report documents the number of recreation visitors and visitor days for all NPS units that reported public use data in Calendar Year 2023 and displays the percent change from the previous year.

State Park Recreation Visitors Percent Change
0 Alabama Horseshoe Bend NMP 72725 0.0731
1 Alabama Little River Canyon NPRES 700638 -0.0353
2 Alabama Natchez Trace PKWY 474939 0.0369
3 Alabama Russell Cave NM 8678 -0.4892
4 Alabama Tuskegee Airmen NHS 22082 0.3684

Annual park ranking report for recreation visits records the number of recreation visitors and the rankings of each national park in Calendar Year 2023 and provides the percentage of total of this year.

1.3 Distribution of National Park Service Lands

The national park service lands includes national parks, monuments, historic sites, recreation areas, seashores, and other federally designated areas. NPS lands are distributed across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. Western states, like California, Alaska, and Utah, often host the largest expanses of NPS land due to their size and natural diversity. Eastern states tend to feature smaller, historically focused NPS sites. States with vast wilderness areas, such as Alaska, have a significant share of NPS lands. Smaller or more urbanized states often have fewer or smaller NPS sites but may house historically critical or highly visited landmarks.

1.4 Most Visited National Park Service Lands

The image features two side-by-side bar charts illustrating recreation visits to national parks. The left chart presents a state-level summary, highlighting California as the leader with 36.16 million visitors, followed by the District of Columbia and Arizona. Other notable states include North Carolina, Florida, and New Jersey. The right chart focuses on individual national parks, with Golden Gate National Park topping the list at 14.95 million visitors, followed by Great Smoky Mountains and Gateway National Park. Parks such as the Grand Canyon and Vietnam Veterans Memorial also rank among the top 10.

The top 10 national parks by recreation visits highlight some of the most popular destinations across the United States. California (CA) leads with 36.16 million visitors, which is also home to Golden Gate National Recreation Area. District of Columbia (DC) hosts two highly visited landmarks, which are the Lincoln Memorial and Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Arizona (AZ) contributes significantly with parks like the Grand Canyon, Lake Mead, and Glen Canyon. North Carolina (NC) and New Jersey (NJ) add diversity with parks such as Great Smoky Mountains and Gateway. Florida (FL) and Alabama (AL) feature prominently due to Gulf Islands and Natchez Trace.
